At the Institute for Autonomous and Connected Systems (IACS), we drive cutting-edge research that bridges theory and real-world applications. Our teams tackle complex challenges in autonomy, robotics, intelligent transportation, sensor integration, connected systems, and cybersecurity, producing solutions that have a tangible impact on industry, defense, and society.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, students and faculty work alongside industry partners, government agencies, and community stakeholders to advance next-generation technologies. Our research spans uncrewed aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles, autonomous mobility platforms, networked sensing systems, and artificial intelligence applications for smart infrastructure.

IACS also provides a robust platform for innovation, including access to advanced laboratories with simulation and field-testing environments. These resources empower researchers and students to prototype, validate, and scale their solutions, transforming ideas into deployable technologies. By combining technical expertise with hands-on experience, our institute fosters a culture of ingenuity and prepares our graduates to become leaders in autonomous and connected systems worldwide.

Flagship programs, including our Uncrewed Systems Design & Development Minor, equip participants with technical skills, practical experience, and professional network needed to excel in the rapidly evolving fields of robotics, autonomous systems, and smart infrastructure. At IACS, we are committed to fostering innovation, driving regional growth, and preparing the next generation of leaders in autonomous and connected technologies.

Message from the Director

Hicham Chaoui

Welcome to the Institute for Autonomous and Connected Systems (IACS) at Old Dominion 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.

As the Inaugural Director of IACS, I am honored to lead an institute dedicated to advancing the frontiers of autonomy, connectivity, and intelligent systems. Our mission is to create a dynamic ecosystem where research, education, industry collaboration, and innovation intersect to address some of society’s most pressing technological challenges.

At IACS, we are committed to pioneering new knowledge and developing practical solutions in areas such as autonomous systems, robotics, intelligent infrastructure, maritime autonomy, artificial intelligence, connected transportation, and cybersecurity. Through interdisciplinary research and partnerships with government, industry, and academia, we strive to accelerate the safe and responsible integration of autonomous and connected technologies into the real world.

Education is a central pillar of our mission. Our Drone Certificate Program, as a hands-on learning opportunity, prepares the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators to lead in this rapidly evolving field.

As we look to the future, IACS will continue to serve as a hub for innovation, collaboration, and thought leadership—driving transformative discoveries that enhance mobility, safety, resilience, and sustainability across domains.

I invite you to explore our programs, engage with our researchers, and join us in shaping the future of autonomous and connected systems.
