Excellent, comprehensive vascular surgery training designed to prepare our graduates to be the next generation of exceptional and capable vascular surgeons.
Celebrating 50 years of excellence in vascular surgery training
The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is one of the oldest and most distinguished programs in the United 91短视频s. Established by Jock Wheeler, MD and Roger Gregory, MD in 1975, it was among the first twenty vascular surgery fellowships in the nation. Dr. Wheeler served as the inaugural program director until 1994.
Over the decades, we have remained committed to world-class training in open and endovascular surgery, vascular access, venous interventions, and vascular laboratory techniques. Our fellows train at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a tertiary care Level I trauma center where the nation's first In-Vitro birth and the first JACHO accredited Vascular Center occurred. Fellows also have access to two hybrid operating rooms, two dedicated vascular catheterization labs and one of the largest vascular ultrasound labs in the country.
Each year, the Vascular Surgery Division performs over 12,000 procedures, providing fellows with extensive hands-on experience, serving as the primary surgeon in more than 500 cases annually. Among nation-wide programs, it continues to score above the 90th percentile in both open and endovascular procedures.
Through strong industry partnerships, our fellows gain early exposure to cutting-edge vascular technologies and emerging clinical devices in aortic, carotid, lower extremity, venous, and vascular access interventions.
With a 100% board pass rate over the past 15 years, our graduates thrive in academic institutions, hybrid programs, and private practice settings.
As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to training the next generation of vascular surgeons with an unwavering focus on excellence, innovation, and patient care.
What sets us apart?
This five-year training program is the newest milestone along our path of excellence in Vascular Surgery education and research at our institution, which began even before the accreditation of our fellowship by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 1984.
Residents will receive extensive and comprehensive experience in both the routine and some of the rarest open and endovascular cases due to the unique patient demographic, and variety of interest from the 11 core additional and non-core teaching faculty.
The program culminates in board examination eligibility and primary certification in vascular surgery.
